Whitecaps FC Launch Match Packs

Starting this Saturday at 10 a.m. PT, Vancouver Whitecaps FC fans will be able to purchase match packs and receive significant savings over individual match prices. The new match packs start at just $159 - all prices include HST and are subject to a $5 processing fee per pack - and include four 2011 Whitecaps FC Major League Soccer regular season home matches spread over the course of the season, as well as the highly anticipated international match against English Premier League side Manchester City.

"Our club has received great support from fans throughout the province with more than 100,000 spectators having already experienced a Whitecaps FC match at Empire Field," said Paul Barber, Whitecaps FC CEO. "We have a number of exciting matches still to come, and felt it was the perfect time to offer a variety of packs that provide our fans with an economical option and the opportunity to see some marquee matches that best suit their busy schedules. Our team took a fun and creative approach to creating the match packs, and we look forward to seeing which pack is the most popular as they all offer something very unique."

The three match packs - GOING HOLLYWOOD, I (HEART) NY, LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR - all include the Manchester City match, valued at $60, and four coveted MLS matches. Aside from season tickets, which also include the Manchester City game, match packs are currently the only way to secure your ticket to the July 18 international match.

GOING HOLLYWOOD is highlighted by the match on Saturday, July 30, when LA Galaxy make their lone visit to Vancouver this season. Galaxy's star-studded roster includes English international David Beckham, American international Landon Donovan and Colombian international Juan Pablo Ángel. Galaxy's last match in Vancouver attracted nearly 50,000 fans back in 2007.

I (HEART) NY includes Vancouver's home tilt against New York Red Bulls on Saturday, May 28. The Red Bulls squad is comprised of a number of international stars including French international Thierry Henry, Mexican international Rafael Márquez, and recently acquired Canadian international Dwayne De Rosario. Also included in this match pack is the final regular season match of the season when Whitecaps FC host defending MLS Cup champions Colorado Rapids at BC Place on Saturday, October 22.

Finally, LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR includes both matches against I-5 rivals Seattle Sounders FC and Portland Timbers. Vancouver hosts Seattle on Saturday, September 24, in the final match at Empire Field and the following weekend welcome Portland on Sunday, October 2 for the club’s first match at the new BC Place. Whitecaps FC Add Depth and Experience with Peter Vagenas

Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that midfielder Panayiotis Alexiou "Peter" Vagenas has been signed to the club's Major League Soccer (MLS) roster. Per club policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

"Peter is an experienced MLS player that reads the game well and is strong technically," said Whitecaps FC head coach Teitur Thordarson. "He will bring additional leadership to our squad, as we head into an important stretch of our season."

Vagenas, 33, joins Whitecaps FC after spending the past two seasons with MLS rivals Seattle Sounders FC, who had selected him as the sixth pick in the 2008 MLS Expansion Draft. He started 16 of his 21 total appearances with the Emerald City outfit for 1,282 minutes of action, recording two assists in the process. Last season, the midfielder started all seven of his Sounders FC appearances for 542 minutes of action.

Prior to joining Seattle in 2009, the 5-foot-8 midfielder spent eight seasons with LA Galaxy, winning two MLS Cup titles with the Southern California outfit in 2002 and 2005. The native of Pasadena, California, had his best season in 2005, captaining the Galaxy to both the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup and MLS Cup titles, while scoring five goals and recording four assists. On November 7, 2007, Vagenas travelled with the Galaxy to Vancouver to play 45 minutes in a friendly match against Whitecaps FC at BC Place Stadium. In his ten-year MLS career, Vagenas has started 180 of his 204 regular season appearances, scoring 14 goals and recording 20 assists.

Vagenas was drafted by the Galaxy in the second round of the 2000 MLS SuperDraft following a successful NCAA Division I career at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). From 1996 to 1999, Vagenas scored 15 goals and recorded 30 assists during his four-year career with the Bruins. As a sophomore, the midfielder helped UCLA to the NCAA College Cup title.

"I'm very pleased to join Vancouver Whitecaps FC," said Vagenas. "I've played in this league for a number of years and I've had some great experiences playing with the Galaxy and Sounders FC. I'm excited to start this new challenge in Vancouver."

Internationally, Vagenas has represented the United States at the U-23 Olympic and senior levels. This included scoring three goals for his country, as he led the USA to a fourth-place finish at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The midfielder has also made three senior appearances for the Americans, having made his debut versus arch-rivals Mexico at the Los Angeles Coliseum on October 25, 2000.

Whitecaps FC Confirm Atiba Harris Surgery

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC confirmed today what TEAM Radio and Full-Time host Tyler Green told you on Tuesday, that striker Atiba Harris underwent successful knee surgery to his right meniscus. The operation was performed on Tuesday, April 26, by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Bob McCormack.

Atiba Harris joined Whitecaps FC last November after being selected in the second round (fourth overall) of the 2010 Major League Soccer (MLS) Expansion Draft. This season, the Saint Kitts and Nevis international has made five starts for 443 minutes of action, contributing offensively with two goals and three assists.

Atiba Harris May Require Surgery

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC have declined to comment, but TEAM Radio has learned that Whitecaps forward Atiba Harris may require surgery to repair his injured right knee. Harris has played in 5 Whitecaps matches including a 3-1 loss to the Dynamo in Houston before tweaking his knee in training prior to the Chivas USA match on April 16th. Harris has yet to return to the line-up or full training.

Harris has 2 goals and 1 assist in 5 games for the Whitecaps this season.

Official club policy is that, “the Whitecaps will not comment on a player’s pending medical requirements”. However, a source close to the Whitecaps told TEAM 1040 that the Whitecaps “are waiting to determine what’s next with regards to Atiba Harris, and that may involve surgery”.

Whitecaps leading goal-scorer Eric Hassli is suspended for the next MLS match against Columbus Crew on Saturday, April 30th and the Whitecaps could look to 17 year old and 1st overall SuperDraft pick Omar Salgado to start alongside Brazilian forward, Camilo. It would be Salgado’s first Major League Soccer start.

Whitecaps FC Training - April 24th, 2011

While all of the starters, including Terry Dunfield who suffered a broken nose, were working out at 8-Rinks after a 2-1 loss to FC Dallas on Saturday, the rest trained at Empire Field.

Jay DeMerit warmed up with the team prior to joining the training staff on the side as he continues to rehab from his groin strain. He ran laps around Empire for the rest of the session. Bedri Gashi also worked out on the side.

Russell Teibert, Shea Salinas, Greg Janicki, Mouloud Akloul all continue to fully train and all look ready to be inserted into the line-up. Janicki and Akloul could both slot in Wednesday against Montreal, while Salinas and Teibert will likely come off the bench before regaining a starting role.

Michael Nachoff and John Thorrington were training fully, but both Nanchoff and Thorrington had to leave training early. Nanchoff with a left ankle injury and Thorrington with a right calf strain.

Joe Cannon worked out with goalkeeping coach Mike Salmon and 3rd GK Brian Sylvestre. During drills with the team, Cannon was his usual intense self. He looks primed and ready to get a start soon.

Other notables training today were Nizar Khalfan, Kevin Harmse, Long Tan and Omar Salgado.

Peter Vagenas was not at training and is back in California. No word from management regarding contract for him.

Next game for Vancouver is Wednesday in the Nutrilite Canadian Championships against the Impact in Montreal. Kickoff at 5pm - prematch show on TEAM 1410 is at 3pm with Tyler Green and David Norman. Listen online at www.teamradio.ca

Eduardo Sebrango announces his retirement

MONTREAL - Forward Eduardo Sebrango announced his retirement, Monday at Saputo Stadium, following a 12-year career, six of which were played with the Montreal Impact. Sebrango, a Canadian originally from Cuba, who turned 38 on April 13, wore the Impact colours from 2002 to 2005, and then again in 2009 and 2010. He scored 45 goals and added 10 assists for 100 points in 136 regular season games, 104 of those games as a starter, for a total of 9,440 minutes played. Sebrango finished his career in Montreal as the club's second all-time leading scorer, behind Mauro Biello.

Sebrango has also donned the uniform of the Vancouver Whitecaps in 1999, and then from 2006 to 2008. He also played for Rochester in 2000 and Hershey in 2001. Sebrango finished his career as the second all-time leading scorer in the American second division with a total of 98 goals and 30 assists for a total of 226 points in 257 career games for a total of 17,659 minutes played.

"It's a very sad moment for me because I felt this day would never come," said Sebrango. "It's a difficult decision for me because I still have the passion and energy to play and live the life of a pro player. I have been very lucky to have played all these years and to leave my sport with my health and with the respect of my peers. I would like to thank Joey Saputo, his family, and the entire Impact organization who gave me the opportunity to make a career by playing the game I love. I would also like to thank the Whitecaps organization, all my coaches and teammates, my parents, my family, as well as my children Gabriella and Donovan.”

"He was one of the best offensive players to ever play in this league," said Impact president Joey Saputo. "He played an important role in the success of the team. He was a true professional on and off the field, and was always devoted to the club."

"Eddie had a great career and he should be very proud of all his accomplishments," said sporting director Nick De Santis. "He has always played on winning teams because he was a big part of those teams’ success. We were lucky to have him in our locker room. He was a great role model for the younger players."

In the playoffs, Sebrango scored 10 goals in 35 career games, winning five championships, two of which were won with the Impact in 2004 and 2009.

In his first season with Montreal in 2002, Sebrango scored 18 goals and won the Giuseppe Saputo trophy as the team's MVP. In 2009, upon returning to Montreal, Sebrango scored three goals in the quarter-final round of the CONCACAF Champions League against Mexican club Santos Laguna.

He also played a total of 24 games for the Cuban national team, scoring 16 goals. He was named Cuban player of the year in 1997, and took part in the Gold Cup tournament and World Cup qualifying games in 1998.

Eduardo Sebrango was named coach with the Impact Academy. He will be responsible of the secondary 2 players, assistant coach of the U16 team and coach of the Academy forwards.

Whitecaps FC lose to Dynamo 3-1 in Houston

Vancouver Whitecaps fell to 1-2-2 on the young MLS season, courtesy a 3-1 loss Sunday against the Houston Dynamo.

Houston opened the scoring in the 37th minute, as Cam Weaver potted a goal off a corner kick.
But the Whitecaps responded right away, as Camilo scored just over a minute later to tie the game at 1-1.  It was Camilo’s third goal of the season.

But Houston re-opened the one-goal lead in the 42nd minute, when Bobby Boswell jumped on a loose ball and sniped it past Jay Nolly.  Worse news for the Whitecaps was that captain Jay DeMerit re-aggravated his injured groin on the play, which eventually forced DeMerit to leave the game.

The second half didn’t go much better for Vancouver, as Houston’s Will Bruin scored in the 76th minute to give the Dynamo a 3-1 lead it would not relinquish.

The Whitecaps were playing without the services of striker Eric Hassli, who received a red card in Wednesday’s 1-1 tie with New England. Terry Dunfield was also not in the lineup, due to a groin injury suffered in Wednesday’s match.

Whitecaps FC v Houston Match Report

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC return to the pitch on Sunday, April 10^th, 2011 for their 5^th Major League Soccer match (and 3^rd in 8 days) of the 2011 season against the Houston Dynamo. The Whitecaps record sits at 1W-1L-2D while the Dynamo record sits at 0W-1L-2D. This is the first ever meeting for the Whitecaps and Dynamo and will be played at Robertson Stadium. Kick-off at 4pm, coverage begins on TEAM 1410 at 2pm with post-match coverage until 8pm. The match will be the first home game of the season for the Houston Dynamo since they opened the season on March 19^th.

Whitecaps FC Report

The Whitecaps back line has gotten infinitely stronger in the past week. The ‘caps had Leathers, Boxall, Rochat and Wagner playing and looked as if no subs were present and available on the back line. This weekend, add Jay DeMerit and Mouloud Akloul into the mix. What it does is provide te opportunity to put Rochat back onto the left side of defense and slot in either DeMerit or Akloul in the middle. It now provides you with cover with Wagner. In addition, with the increased health of Davide Chiumiento into the line-up, the right midfield is strengthened and Knight can provide cover on the both the right wing and right back area. Bilal Duckett is also in the mix and could supply cover at any of the backline positions. The Whitecaps are finally finding their feet at the back and the confidence builder that last Wednesday’s 1-1 9 man draw brought will only improve the overall defensive strength Vancouver has. I could see Akloul and DeMerit sharing the duties on the backline on Sunday, slowly working them both back into the line-up.

In Midfield, times are a little more interesting for the Blue and White. With Dunfield injured and not on the trip, Gershon Koffie suspended for the match and subsequently on International duty with the U20 Ghana side, and John Thorrington, who is also missing the trip, meaning that Kevin Harmse will start in a central midfield role. With no Dunfield, Koffie or Thorrington, I would hazard a guess that Khalfan will slot into the middle to pair with Harmse, although head coach Teitur Thordarson did suggest on Thursday that Khalfan, Chiumiento and Alain Rochat could slot into the middle of the park. But Teitur has been good at gamesmanship this season with deflecting options. If Rochat does actual start in the centre midfield position, he could more than adequately fill the role after watching his varied runs on Wednesday night against New England.

Russell Teibert should return to the left flank after returning from international duty with the Canadian U20 squad. On the right side, the options include Wes Knight, Davide Chiumiento and Nizar Khalfan. If Khalfan does indeed start in the middle it will be a question of fitness for Chiumiento versus skill with Knight. Wes Knight has filled in honourably on the right side but has lacked the creative punch down that side. Chiumiento meanwhile lacks pace, but provides so much talent and skill that it will be interesting to see which direction Thordarson goes.

Up front, there is no doubt that people would like the chance to see Omar Salgado play and in front of his home states fans, and there is a very good chance they will get that chance, but Atiba Harris has been good this season and Camilo Sanvezzo has done well to remain the two starters for Sunday. Salgado should come off the bench depending on the situation the Whitecaps find themselves in late in the match. Harris leads the Whitecaps in points and has shown he can hold the ball up well. He will have his work cut out for him against tough central defenders. With Sanvezzo, the Whitecaps have a speedy forward who can play the ball off Harris and use that speed against tall, physical defenders. If Camilo doesn’t flop like he did on occasion against New England (as he picked up a yellow in that match for just that), he has potential to have a big game and cause havoc for the Dynamo defense. The Whitecaps need Camilo to be the player fans saw against Sporting KC. Houston defender Bobby Boswell has also played every single minute of every match Houston has played this season including the 120 minute affair midweek in US Open Cup play, something the ‘caps forwards need to take advantage of.

In goal, Jay Nolly will start and play. Nolly was in control of the match and the 18 yard box for almost the entire game against the Revolution, save for the final 2 minutes. He has shown that he deserves to be the starter and nothing should change for this Sunday.

Houston Dynamo Report

In goal, the Dynamo feature Goalkeeper Tally Hall has taken over the reigns in net after Pat Onstad retired to pursue a career in coaching with DC United (Onstad is now back between the posts for DC following injuries to the clubs goalkeepers). Although Hall has limited experience, just 8 career MLS appearances, the SeaTac, Washington native has done well posting back-to-back appearances in the MLS Team of the week.
On the defensive side of the ball, Houston are coming off their second worst season for goals allowed, but have been stubborn to start the 2011 season, allowing only 3 goals in 3 matches. The backline features centre back Bobby Boswell, who has played in all of the 390 minutes of the club’s season so far including MLS and US Open Cup play. Canadian international Andre Hainault is also poised to start at the centre back position and will be the backbone of the defense against Vancouver’s physical and speedy forwards. Mike Chabala and Hunter Freeman round out the backline for the Dynamo, Freeman a veteran coming from IK Start in Norway and Chabala through the Dynamo reserve squad.

Midfield wise, the Dynamo could be without veteran Brad Davis, who has been battling a hamstring injury throughout the week, but could make his return against the Whitecaps. If Davis, a right sided player doesn’t play, look for Danny Cruz, a young speedy midfielder take the role on the right. The match-up would be a terrific one between Teibert and Cruz down that side. Both Cruz and Teibert are speedy players that will get up and down the field and could be an incredible match-up, especially in the heat of Houston. Though the middle, the Dynamo have Lovell Palmer, a tough physical Jamaican international and Geoff Cameron who is looking to return to action after an injury during the 2010 season. On the left side of midfield, Corey Ashe is expected to start, a quick left-footed player and has been very versatile in the first 3 MLS games this season. Ashe has played two matches at right midfield and one at left back.

At the forward position, Houston will be without the mainstay of MLS, and all-time leading scorer for Houston, Brian Ching. Instead they will go with Cam Weaver. Weaver is a tall, strong forward that could supply all sorts of problems for the Whitecaps back 4. Weaver will likely partner with Will Bruin, the 11^th overall draft pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. Bruin is also a tough, tall, skillfull player. Neither has lit up the score sheet however with only Weaver scoring this season for the Dynamo forwards.

Head-To-Head

Sunday’s match is the first-ever meeting between Whitecaps FC and the Dynamo. The only time the Blue and White faced a team from Houston was during the North American Soccer League days when the ‘Caps lost 1-0 at home to Houston Hurricane on June 2, 1979. However, the weekend game will be the 45th time that Vancouver play a Texas-based outfit since 1974. The ‘Caps have an all-time record of 7W-12L-2D in Texas, with the ‘Caps holding an overall record of 27W-13L-4D versus clubs from The Lone Star State.

Common Ground

There are some common ties between both sets of players. Whitecaps FC defender/midfielder Kevin Harmse was with the Dynamo during preseason in 2010, while on September 1, 2003, Houston defender Eddie Robinson scored for San Jose Earthquakes in a 4-3 friendly win over Whitecaps FC at Swangard Stadium. In the 2006 United Soccer Leagues First Division (USL-1) campaign, striker Cam Weaver scored both goals as a member of former USL-1 club Seattle Sounders during a 2-2 draw with the ‘Caps at Swangard on May 26, 2006. In addition, Canadian International Andre Hainault will play a second Canadian side in MLS competition, the first being Toronto FC.

Whitecaps Training Notes - April 7

After a tough 1-1 draw between Vancouver and New England, the Whitecaps got back to training and conditioning today.

News from today:
- Shea Salinas had an injury set-back today and will not be on the trip after being included in the 18 man roster last night
- Terry Dunfield still limping from his groin strain and is unlikely to make the trip
- John Thorrington picked up a new injury on his calf and may not travel with the team.
- Gershon Koffie is suspended
So, the Whitecaps have a dilemma in the centre midfield. Kevin Harmse will most likely start in the middle and could play with either Chiumiento, Khalfan or Thorrington (if he can play) and even Alain Rochat potentially.

Camilo and Harris are almost guaranteed to start as the forwards.

- Jay DeMerit will travel with the team and could start on Sunday if not make a substitute appearance.
- Greg Janicki is unlikely to make the trip. He did not train today and is still limping noticeably.

Russell Teibert is back with the squad and will travel to Houston. He will likely start Left Midfield.

Omar Salgado will meet the team in Houston and could be included in the 18 man roster.

Jay Nolly should start in net.

If there is no Thorrington, Dunfield or DeMerit, look to Alain Rochat to captain the Whitecaps side on Sunday.

Whitecaps FC Striker Camilo Named MLS Player Of The Week

VANCOUVER, BC - Major League Soccer announced today that Vancouver Whitecaps FC striker Camilo has been named the league's Player of the Week for Week 3. The Brazilian attacker earned the weekly award as voted on by North American Soccer Reporters (NASR).

Making his first start in MLS on Saturday, the 22-year-old made himself an instant Whitecaps FC hero with two goals and one assist to earn a 3-3 draw with Sporting Kansas City at Empire Field.

The South American's first two goals for the Blue and White were all the more dramatic after Vancouver needed to come from three goals down to earn a point on the Pacific National Exhibition grounds in East Vancouver, having done so in the most thrilling of styles.

Trailing 3-1 to Sporting KC in five minutes of time added on at the end of the second half, Camilo scored his first goal for the club from a Davide Chiumiento pass before scoring the equalizer with a brilliant far-post header from Nizar Khalfan's well-executed cross for the 3-3 result.
