Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced Signing of centre back Mouloud Akloul

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that centre back Mouloud Akloul has been signed to the club’s Major League Soccer (MLS) roster. Per club policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

"Mouloud has done extremely well to overcome the unfortunate injury he suffered last season and be part of our MLS roster," said Whitecaps FC head coach Teitur Thordarson. "We know Mouloud has many qualities as a centre back, but his determination to get himself fit again just shows how strong of a character he is. I'm very much looking forward to working with him this season."

Akloul, 28, joins Whitecaps FC's MLS roster after coming through a frustrating 2010 season with the Blue and White. After initially joining the club for last year's USSF D-2 Pro League campaign on April 8, the native of Lorient, France, suffered a fracture to his left ankle after scoring the match winner in his Vancouver debut on April 24, as the 'Caps defeated Athletic Club of St. Louis 1-0. Though the injury restricted the defender to just two appearances for the club last season, Akloul has since recovered to be become part of Vancouver's inaugural MLS season.

“I’m very happy to sign with Vancouver Whitecaps FC,” said Akloul. “It’s a beautiful city and a fantastic club. I look forward to showing everyone what I’m capable of this season.”

Prior to his spell in Vancouver, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound defender started his career with FC Lorient Bretagne Sud in his hometown of Lorient, France, before spending two seasons with Vannes Olympique Club. The centre back then had spells in Algeria with Jeunesse Sportive de Kabylie and Mouloudia Olympique de Béjaïa before making a switch to the Middle East when he joined Al-Ittihad Kalba of the second-tier United Arab Emirates Football League Division 1 for the 2008-09 season.
